A Non-Profit Organisation for the Promotion of Trout Fishing

The Club

The Tauranga Anglers Club is the only Tauranga based angling club dedicated to trout fishing and attracting members across the Western Bay of Plenty, from Katikati to Te Puke. The Club was formed in 1990 after regional Fish and Game Councils replaced Acclimatisation Societies for management of sport shooting and fishing in New Zealand. The Club grew from an informal anglers group that had been in existence for many years.

The aims of the Club are wide-ranging, and include:-

Encouraging people to take up the sport for its recreational and social benefits,

Educating anglers in both the technical skills and environmental issues of the sport;

Enhancing and increasing the angling resources in the area;

Providing a social environment for people interested in trout fishing.

Whatever your experience or ability, if you are interested in trout fishing this could be the Club for you.

Our Fishing Region

Tauranga is situated in the Eastern Fish and Game region. In general terms, this region covers the Bay of Plenty, Rotorua lakes, East Coast, Waikaremoana, and the Waikato river and lakes from Huka Falls to Maraetai.

It includes some of the best known waters in New Zealand, and caters for all methods and styles of trout fishing – lakes, river and stream; fly fishing, spinning, trolling and harling. Both rainbow and brown trout can be caught throughout the region, with most waters holding good numbers of fish. A licence is required to fish for trout.

Because of the impracticalities of communicating with individual licence holders, membership of a club provides the best opportunity for individuals to obtain information on what is happening in the region. Through membership of a club, you can have your say about what happens in your fishing district.

In the past year the club has had speakers from Eastern Fish and Game including Field Officers and Hatchery staff, Department of Conservation Officers, Local Fishing Guides, Commercial Fly Tiers, New Zealand Fly Fishing Team Members, Fishing Equipment and Clothing Sale Representatives.

Club nights are held on the fourth Monday of each month at the Tauranga Fish and Dive Club, Keith Allen Drive, Sulphur Point and begin at 7.30pm. Visitors are most welcome.

Please note that there is no club night in January and should the fourth Monday fall on a public holiday, Club Night is held the Monday prior.

Club Trips

The Club organises one fishing trip each month to a variety of easily accessible places, usually one or two day weekend events. River excursions naturally favour the fly or spin angler, whilst trips to lakes cater for all types of fishing. Trip location is dependent on members suggestions to Committee and some of the more recent club trips have included Lake Tarawera, Blue Lake, Lake Okareka, and Lake Okatina; Te Awa Campsite Rangitakei River, Ashpit Bay Lake Rerewhakaaitu, Lake Aniwhenua and streams, Ngongotaha Stream, Waioweka River and Taupo Rivers,

Trophies

The Club has several trophies which are awarded each year. Most are for trout caught during the year, based on both weight and condition factor, with categories for male and female anglers, senior and junior. Other awards include casting, photography and newsletter items. The trophies are presented at the Club’s end of year social function .

Fly Tying Courses

The Club holds fly tying evening periodically, and a full fly tying course is run from time to time.

Take a Kid Fishing

This is a nation wide programme which gives children the opportunity to experience something they have never done before. The Tauranga Anglers Club normally arranges for a group of less privileged children to visit a hatchery and catch a trout with a fly rod in the Children’s Fishing Pond.

Wader Safety

The club organizes a practical wader safety evening periodically which includes an opportunity for anglers to gain knowledge in wader safety.

Club Equipment

The Club has a book and video library, Waders, Float Tubes, and Canning Machine for the use of members. The Club also owns a large marquee tent that is taken on camping club trips for communal use and can be used free of charge by members.

Advertiser Discounts to Members

Local businesses support the Club by advertising in the club newsletter and provide discounts for members.

Buddy System

The club operates a buddy system for its members wanting to have fishing mates and also those available to teach beginners.

Newsletter

The Club’s monthly newsletter contains details of coming events, articles of current and general interest, tackle tips, fly tying, members reports of fishing trips and a ‘for sale/wanted’ column.’

The Committee

Like most clubs, ours is administered by a committee which is elected by the members every year. The Committee comprises of the President, Vice President, Senior and Junior Club Captains, Secretary, Treasurer and a number of committee members.

Affiliations

The Tauranga Anglers Club is affiliated to the Tauranga Fish and Dive Club, which is an amalgamation of the Pleasure Boat Club and the Underwater Club. The Water Ski Club is also an affiliated member.
